NYTimes.com looking for Software Engineer

The New York Times is looking for a creative and talented software engineer to work as part of the team that builds and maintains the software that runs our site and content management systems.  As part of our digital team, you will work with the applications that consume and publish the content that supports the New York Times website and all of our downstream content consumers.

Responsibilities include:

  • Building software tools that help site producers more efficiently present material in different contexts as we keep up with emerging technologies
  • Integrating third party content and other data sources into nytimes.com and into our content management systems
  • Writing software applications that publish our content across multiple channels
  • Working with project managers, designers, editors, and other technologists, as part of a team to enable new site functionality
  • The ability to quickly jump into and learn existing systems built in Java and Perl

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
  • A solid understanding of web application architecture and the fundamentals of software design
  • 3-5+ years experience programming in Perl, in particular regular expressions
  • 3-5+ years experience programming web applications in Java
  • An understanding of object oriented software and design patterns
  • Experience writing software that reads, writes, and manipulates XML
  • Unix / Linux proficiency
  • Strong experience working with SQL.  Should possess the ability to manually update data records using hand-written SQL.
  • 3-5+ years working in a project-driven software development environment
  • Experience with Hibernate is a plus
  • Experience with content management systems or blogging platforms is highly desired
