NYTimes.com looking for Java Software Engineer

The New York Times is looking for a creative and talented Java software engineer to work on our website and content management systems. As part of our digital team, you will build pages and modules that help readers explore the world through our extraordinary archive of articles, photos and information. You will also be asked to build tools that help site producers more efficiently present that material in different contexts as we reinvent our site for the digital age.

This position is in the Software Development group of NYTimes.com’s IT Department, but will work closely with people in editorial, design, and product management.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • 2-5+ years experience writing web application in Java and familiarity with J2EE concepts.
  • An understanding of general web application architecture and the fundamentals of software design.
  • Strong experience working with SQL.  Should possess the ability to manually update data records using hand-written SQL.
  • 2-5 years working in a project-driven software development environment
  • Experience with Open Source Java frameworks such as Hibernate and Spring

Plusses:

  • Good working knowledge of Perl.
  • Experience working in a Unix environment.  Basic familiarity is required.  Shell scripting or administration experience is a plus.
  • Experience working with web content management / web publishing systems.
  • Experienced in hand-coding HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and DHTML
  • Experience with XML, XSL and XSLT highly desirable
  • Knowledge of AJAX or other Web 2.0 technologies

NYTimes.com looking for Associate Technical Writer

NYTimes.com is seeking a technical writer to write end-user and reference documentation for in-house staff and NYTimes.com users. The Associate Technical Writer will also assist with other projects as needed, including internal developer documentation and API documentation.

Reports to: Technical Writer

Responsibilities:

Write and edit online help, user guides, quick-start guides and reference documentation for in-house CMS and other tools

Work with developers and project managers to transform internal technical documentation into user-friendly materials for Web producers and other end users

Review and edit wireframes; collaborate with designers and editors to ensure consistency of instructional text and other site elements

Work with product and project managers to update and maintain NYTimes.com’s end-user FAQs 

Contribute to documentation plans and strategy


Qualifications:

Minimum 2 years’ experience writing online help and other documentation for a Web site or Web-based software

Experience with Content Management Systems

Knowledge of HTML, online help tools, image editing tools, wikis

Experience creating end-user tutorials or training materials

Excellent writing and organization skills

Ability to take initiative and work independently

Ability to interview users and developers and write procedural and reference documents based on information they provide

B.A. in English or Technical Communication
